February Update and the 2021 season

Spring is well and truly here and thoughts turn to catching up with friends and family and of course to bowls. The news is positive and it is good to hear that a large majority of our members have already had their first COVID vaccination. Planning and preparation for the 2021 season are now well underway.

The Government/Boris COVID Roadmap

"As part of step one, there will be further limited changes from 29 March.....Outdoor sports facilities, such as tennis and basketball courts, will be allowed to reopen, and people can take part in formally organised outdoor sports." The great news is that this includes outdoor bowls!!

Bowls England are working with Sport England and is planning to issue detailed guidance early next week to bowls club. With this guidance and all we learned and experienced last year the committee is confident that we will be able to start bowling safely as planned in April.

It is very exciting and something to really look forward to after such a long period of lockdowns and restrictions. A further newsletter will follow shortly.

Membership - Linda

You should all have received your 2021 membership application forms. However, if you have not or if you have any queries please get in touch with Linda at lindawicks1967@gmail.com There is also a lot of information on the membership pages on the website.

Club Development Plan - Jeannette

The Bowls Club Committee are currently in the process of producing a Development Plan for the club. The Development Plan identifies the club’s vision for the future, its aims and the ways in which the club hopes to achieve them. It will be short working document and we feel it is important to engage members in the consultation process. As a starting point we would like to ask all members to complete a SWOT analysis.

The SWOT analysis is the first step in determining the club priorities for development. The analysis will allow us to identify the Clubs Strengths; Weaknesses; Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) as the membership see it and will also help us to see which areas in the club we need to move forward and concentrate our efforts and resources on. The plan will also highlight the areas that will require grant aid and financial support and will be used to describe the main characteristics of our club in any grant or funding application forms.

The SWOT will come out by email (or paper copies for those without email) and "Don't Panic" full instructions will be given.

The Green

The greenkeeping team report that following the snow and ice and the weeks of wet weather, they have been able to get back onto the green and surrounds (in line with COVID guidelines of course) in preparation for the new season. The pictures were taken on Wednesday and the green and the new grass in Oak Tree corner are looking quite good. Another plea for brushers. Wednesday and Friday mornings are still not covered. If you would like to know more or think you may be able to help please get in touch with Jim or Paul.

New equipment

A grant of £325 was agreed by the Biddenden Community fund to allow us to purchase some more equipment to help us improve inclusion. We have purchased a set of Drakes Pride, bowls size 0000 which will be ideal not only for young people who have outgrown the junior bowls but also for other bowlers with stiff/sore fingers/hands who are struggling with a larger bowl. We have also bought a "Bowls Mate" which is designed to help bowlers balance when they bowl. These along with the other aids which the club has (all of which are legal to use in matches) will be available for members, juniors and other visitors/potential bowlers to try and to borrow. Thank you to Biddenden Parish Council.
